Entry Door Prices in Staten Island & New Jersey

Don’t Be Fooled by the Low Door Prices at Big-Box Stores. Quality Entry Doors for $200-$900 Just. Don’t. Exist.

Most Staten Island & New Jersey homeowners have no conceivable idea how much a QUALITY entry door should cost. And it’s because of what we at The Men With Tools call “The Home Depot” Effect.

Here’s how it works…

When starting the buying process for an entry door, a lot of homeowners first turn to big-box stores like Home Depot, Lowe’s, and so on. These stores have aisles on aisles of entry doors, so it’s easy for people to browse their collection and begin figuring out what they want.

The problem is that big-box stores leave homeowners with an unrealistic idea of what a quality entry door costs. The truth is that you CANNOT get a great entry door for those low prices you see on the shelves of Lowe’s or Home Depot. It’s just not possible. Nor is it practical to go cheap on this kind of entry door if you plan to stay in your home for the next 10 or more years.

So what’s the “right” price for an entry door in Staten Island & New Jersey? Below, we break down the different categories of entry door pricing and find out. Note: Prices are for single entry doors without side lites, transoms, or installation.

$200 to $900: RUN AWAY... FAST!

$200 to $900:
RUN AWAY... FAST!

This is the big-box-store price range we mentioned above. It’s the cost of an entry door “as is” right off the shelf, and it doesn’t get more bare-bones. These are base-model doors –  the lowest of the low end. Mass-produced, cheaply made, poorly performing, and lacking even the most basic features that make for a quality door.

If you want to change or upgrade anything on these doors – like an exterior color or even a hinge finish – it becomes a special-order sale. The door is no longer mass-produced, so the price goes up into the next category (see below). But though the door is now “custom made,” the quality is still questionable… at best.

goes up into the next category (see below). But though the door is now “custom made,” the quality is still questionable… at best.

Problems with entry doors in this price range include:

  • Hollow door slab without insulation, resulting in poor energy efficiency.
  • Low-quality interior wood stiles and rails that tend to rot and warp when exposed to moisture.
  • Finger-jointed wood jambs and frames that are also prone to rotting and warping.
  • Inferior weather stripping, which leads to air infiltration and drafts.
  • Poor security due to the hollow door slab and basic hinges that are barely better than interior door hinges.
  • Fiberglass entry doors are typically made with 1mm fiberglass skin that looks more like plastic than wood.
  • Steel entry doors are usually a thin 26 to 28-gauge layer of steel (the higher the number, the thinner the metal) that dents extremely easily – even from a strong knock!

Sure, these doors can sometimes look good. But once installed on your Staten Island or New Jersey home, those killer looks will quickly fade from wear and tear.

$1,000 to $2,499: “Just Right” for Many Homeowners

$1,000 to $2,499:
“Just Right” for Many Homeowners

This is the Toyota or Chevrolet-level of entry door. At this price, you’re going to get a great entry door that looks excellent, performs well, and contains the features you need to make your home more efficient:

  • Solid wood-cladded jambs and frames
  • Enhanced/added weather stripping to cut down on air infiltration/drafts
  • Styrofoam-filled core to improve energy efficiency
  • Fiberglass entry doors are made with 1.5mm fiberglass skin that convincingly reproduces a realistic wood look
  • Steel entry doors are made from 24-gauge steel that dents only from continued wear and tear.

You typically can’t get this category of entry door at a big-box store; instead, you have to buy them from an actual contractor. A big advantage here is that, unlike a Home Depot or Lowe’s, a reputable contractor is better equipped to help you get the right entry door for your needs and budget.

A Word of Caution

As with any other home-improvement project, some companies inflate their entry door prices. It’s possible that a company will try to sell you a $1,000-$2,499 entry door (or, heaven forbid, a $200-$700 entry door) for $2,500 or more. But remember: The ONLY time you should spend more than $2,000 on an entry door is if you’re going with a brand like ProVia – period.

This is why it’s so important to do your due diligence on ANY Staten Island & New Jersey door company you’re considering. Read their customer reviews. Look at their guarantees. Ask them as many questions as you can think of. If you determine that the company is honest and trustworthy, you can rest easy knowing they’ll provide you with the best entry door for your budget.
