What is Hardwood floor refinishing?
Hardwood floor refinishing is a process of sanding off existing scratches, and cleaning off existing chemicals, dirt and imperfections to make your old floors look brand new again.
How much dust can I expect?
All refinishing projects create a certain level of fine dust that can escape to all parts of the home without the proper protection. At The Men With Tools Home Remodeling we’ve come up with two solutions.
1. Dustless refinishing – Our dustless containment units capture up to 95% of all the dust created during the refinishing process leaving your home almost dust free.
2. Containment – We work to contain the dust to the work area by covering and sealing off all unaffected rooms with plastic.
How long does the process take?
Our UV hardwood floor refinishing process can be completed in 1-2 days in most cases, however certain uncontrolled conditions may effect dry times ie: weather, existing floor removal, etc…..
Is the process safe for my family and pets?
All of our products, from sealers to finishes are non toxic and certified to be safe for your loved ones.
How many coats of finish should I apply?
Our finishes are one of the strongest site applied finishes on the market and that’s not all. In a recent study our finish was tested against major brand pre-finished manufacturer’s aluminum oxide finishes, and it outperformed them by 22% on an independent taber test.
When considering how many coats should be applied, its important to note the traffic conditions in the space. Homes with young children and large pets will wear faster (usually 3-5 years per coat) while other less trafficked homes will get more use from each coat before the finish wears through (5-7 years per coat).
Should I choose a satin, semi-gloss or high-gloss finish?
While this is mainly a matter of taste, higher traffic homes could benefit from a satin or semi-gloss finish because surface scratches will be less noticeable.
How durable are your finishes?
Durability depends on 2 main factors, the type of finish and the number of coats. Our coat and cure finish will be twice as durable than an oil or water based finish.
How long till I can walk on my floors?
With our coat and cure UV system you will be able to walk on your floors immediately!
What about my furniture?
With our coat and cure UV system you can move your furniture back on to the floor the same day! As for air dry finishes, No furniture should be placed on the floor for at least 3 days with a water based finish or 7-10 days with an oil based finish.
I’m painting my house. Should I paint first?
There is no clear cut correct answer to this. If you refinish prior to painting you risk spilling paint on your freshly refinished flooring. If you paint first you risk getting the dust produced by refinishing stuck in the paint. You will also need to touch up the baseboard where the buffer may have effected the fresh paint.
I have a large dog/pet. What do I need to know?
During the refinishing process you will want to keep your pet out of the work space. Afterward the best way to protect your floor from your pet will be to keep their nails trimmed to prevent scratching.
Do you work on the weekends?
Yes we do! We understand everyone has a different schedule and do our best to accommodate your needs.
